Winter Plumbing Problems #2
As winter approaches it is time that we double check and make sure that we have prepared ourselves for the cold and snow. Cold wind and snow can have damaging effects on our plumbing, but there are things that we can do to make sure that our plumbing will last through it.
There are many different problems that usually come up from your plumbing during wintertime. Here are some types for the following things; kitchen sink freezing, noisy pipes, heating problems, exposed pipes and oil line freezing.
Oil lines can freeze because of the water that is in the pipes, and to prevent this might be a pretty big and messy job so you might want to hire professional plumbers to help out. You want to make sure that your oil tank doesn’t have any water or residue in it, as well as make sure that your pipes are properly insulated.
If you live in a pretty cold climate it is always best to talk to your plumbers about pipe insulation. Most of the time this is done when they are first installed but it might be smart to call in a professional to make sure that the insulation is good and that it will continue to prevent the pipes from freezing.
Another common problem that becomes worse during the wintertime is noisy pipes. Many times it is hard to figure out what exactly is causing it so as soon as you can it is important that you show a professional where the noisy pipes are and allow him to help you figure out the problem.
One that is maybe a little less common than the others is your pipe under your kitchen sink freezing. This is due mainly to the fact that most kitchen sinks are positioned right under a window and the pipes are close if not partially outside. Sometimes simply leaving the cabinet door open will help solve this problem, but if it doesn’t you might want to bring in the professionals.
Many homes have to protect exposed pipes that are found outside around the house and yard. Besides double-checking for good insulation, it is smart to tape up the pipes, especially the seams.
It is also smart to double check your heater to make sure that everything is running properly. If you have any difficulties or problems starting up your heater, call in a professional to help you do some routine maintenance work to get everything working perfectly.
